WELCOME BACK

Dear Second Grade Parents and Students,

Welcome back!  I hope that you have had a very healthy and happy summer.

Science will be taught by Mrs. McGrath twice a week according to the NYS core curriculum.  We will be incorporating STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) wherever possible.

We will be working with a new Math Consumable Textbook.  The math is the same but the book itself is quite different.  I will send it home one night for your perusal but then it will remain in the classroom as it is too heavy to carry home every night.  We will tear out the pages for homework.

Please keep in mind that it is very important that the girls be on line by 8:20 am, as class begins at 8:30 am.  The girls should be in full uniform every day except gym day which is Thursday.  The only acceptable headbands are plain navy, black or white.  The girls may only were stud earrings or huggies.

Homework will be given on a daily basis.  I expect all homework in school the next day unless otherwise specified.  Adequate notice will be given for all tests.  The girls should study a little bit each night.

On the first day of school, I will teach the children a heading that is to be used for all homework, as well as, on all tests.

I will be teaching Religion, First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion.  At the present time, we do not have a date for either Sacrament.

If you have any questions, please write a note(the homework notebook is a good idea) and I will answer you as promptly as possible.

God Bless!
Mrs. Romano

WELCOME BACK!

Dear Second Grade Parents and Students,

Welcome back!  I hope that you have had a very healthy and happy summer.

Science will be taught by Mrs. McGrath twice a week.  The girls will be working with the NYS curriculum and incorporating STEM into this particular subject area.
As a class we will also include STEM wherever possible in our other subject areas.

We will working with a new Math Consumable Book.  The contents of the Math will remain the same but the book itself is quite different.  I will send the book home for your perusal one night and then it will remain in the classroom.  The book is just too heavy to bring home nightly, so we will tear out what we will use for homework.

Please keep in mind that it is very important that the children be on time for school.  We begin at 8:30 am.  The girls should be in full uniform every day - only PLAIN white, navy or black headbands are acceptable, earrings should be posts, or huggies, school shoes should be worn except on physical educations days, which are Thursdays.

Homework will be given on a daily basis.  I expect homework to be completed and handed in the next day.  Adequate notice of all tests will be given and the girls should study a little bit each night.

On the first day of school, I will teach the children how to write a heading in their notebook.  The heading is to be used for all homework, as well as, tests.

I will be teaching Religion, First Reconciliation, and First Holy Communion.  As of the present time we do not have a date for either Sacrament.

If you have any questions, please write a note and I will answer it as promptly as possible.

God Bless!

I would like to thank all of you for your cooperation during Reconciliation. The ceremony was certainly.y beautiful and the girls were perfect!

Just some information - the girls are working on a STEM project (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in science involving force. The girls will be creating centrifugal force with cups, measuring string, pennies and water. The idea is that the faster you swing the cup over your head, the less chance of the penny or the water flying out. It should be FUN.

The Second Grade will be participating in the school Science Fair in May. The children will be working with myself and Madam Peters. We have titled the STEM lesson Past meets the Present.
The girls will be working with toothbots being recreated into moving Scarab Beetles (Egypt of course).

The girls will be planning what materials will work best, how heavy or light the material should be, what directions the toothbots should move and the design of the beetles.

We are continuing our measurement in Math - inches, feet, yards, centimeters, cups, pints, quarts, gallons. We will begin our study of multiplication and division after Easter.

Please continue to have your daughters read every night, it is extremely important.
Thanks.

JANUARY 2012

Dear Second Grade Parents and Students,

Welcome back! I hope you enjoy a happy and healthy New Year.

On Thursday January 12, 2012 there will be a Science test on pages B31 - B44.
On Friday January 13, 2012 there will be a double digit subtraction test with borrowing.

Just to keep you updated Reconciliation will be held in the Sacred Heart Chapel at 11:00am on March 10th. The girls should be dressed appropriately for the Chapel. They may wear skirts or dresses to the knee or below. They must wear socks or stockings, no open-toed shoes. Thank you.

Egypt is coming! We will beginnning our study of Ancient Egypt this month. We work on this project approximately once a week. The first step that the girls will be working on in the classroom is what they already know. They will be accessing any prior knowledge that they have acquired on their own. We will then continue to what we want to know and then what we learned. This, as you know, is a KWL chart. The children will decide, with guidance, what the two or three big questions about Egypt should be.

The girls will begin to learn how to gather information and to write it down on index cards to help them keep their information in order. The girls will use these cards to write a short report on their Egypt interest.

The girls will also be incorporating a STEM(science, technology, engineering and math) into a joint project with Madame Peters and Ms. D'Auria who is the middle school Math teacher. I am keeping this under wraps for now.

The girls will plan and execute how to create a child-sized mummy using materials available in the classroom.

Thank you for your support in all that they do. If the girls need anything for Egypt I will let you know.
